JOB ANNOUNCEMENT: CHOIR DIRECTOR

Hope Lutheran Church is seeking a qualified person to prepare and lead the choir so that it may contribute to inspirational and transformative worship at Hope Lutheran Church, using a variety of musical styles and enabling the gifts of the church. The choir director collaborates with other musicians and the pastor to build the worship and music ministry of Hope.

Essential Functions:

• Serves as director of the Hope choir, rehearsing them weekly with the goal of the choir singing two Sundays a month from September through Pentecost Sunday, plus Christmas Eve, either Maundy Thursday or Good Friday, and other special services and events.
• Selects music that is varied in style, appropriate for both the season and theme of the day (coordinating with the pastor), and suitable for the skill of choir members.
• Helps recruit singers for the choir and offers ongoing training and encouragement.

Other Responsibilities:

• Informs admin of musical selections for bulletins.
• Meets with Hope music staff and the Worship and Music Committee to help plan seasons and overall shape of worship and music at Hope.
• Maintains Hope's music library and orders music, communicating with the Campus Administrator as needed.
• Arranges for substitute director in the event of prolonged absence.

Minium Qualifications:

• Knowledge of sacred choral music, hymnody, and liturgical music.
• Experience rehearsing and directing a choir with an accompanist(s).
• A degree in music or music education with an emphasis on choral performance is preferred.

Physical Requirements:

• Dexterity of hands and body to physically conduct.
• Ability to hear.
• Ability to efficiently communicate with others.
• Ability to see to read music.

• Technical Expertise: Advanced level of proficiency in choral conducting. Knowledge of varied repertoire and ability to learn new music.
• Creativity and Innovation: makes suggestions and takes acceptable risks for the sake of enhancing the worship and music ministry of Hope Lutheran Church.
• Consistent Preparation: Always rehearses sufficiently so music is performed well to enhance the worship life of the congregation.
• Informing others: Meets deadlines for communicating music titles for publication.
• Interpersonal Skills: establishes good working relationships with staff and volunteers, especially those involved in music ministries. Offers criticism with tact and avoids communication triangles.
• Team Orientation: Advocates for and encourages participation in the music program of Hope, fostering a safe, creative, and growing atmosphere.
• Employee must agree to uphold and support the mission, vision, and welcome strategy of the Church.

This is an at-will, part-time position of approximately 6 to 8 hours per week.
