Job Description

TYPE OF RECRUITMENT:  External  

POSITION:  Heating Plant Operator

LOCATION:  NDSCS – Wahpeton, North Dakota  

TYPE OF APPOINTMENT:  Full-time, 12-month, non-exempt, benefitted position

JOB SUMMARY:  Under the general supervision of the Heating Plant Operator Lead, performs journey-level duties within the heating plant and other related duties as assigned. The position may perform other duties that are considered necessary for the operation of the heating plant and campus heating distribution system.

SALARY:  $42,000 - $56,000, commensurate with education and experience

Minimum Requirements



  • Must support the mission, vision, and values of NDSCS

  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • One year of experience with high-pressure boiler operations or related equipment, and/or mechanical experience

  • Ability to work with high pressures/ temperatures, hazardous chemicals, heights, and confined spaces

  • Basic mechanical skills

  • Ability to operate basic hand tools, power tools, computerized workstations, water analysis lab equipment, diagnostic equipment, and payloaders

  • Ability to lift a max of 50-75 pounds

Preferred Qualifications



  • Boiler operator license comparable to Minnesota 1st Class, Grade B or higher

  • Multi-fuel type boiler operation experience

  • Valid Driver's License
