Job Description

Retired University Police Officer – University Police Services (PERS RETIRED & NEVADA POST CERTIFIED) Position located across the University of Nevada, Las Vegas campus, College of Southern Nevada, Desert Research Institute, and Nevada State College. Pay & Benefits

  • Police Officer I – Grade 36, Step 1: $67,901.76 per year.
  • Police Officer II – Grade 40, Step 1: $80,763.84 per year.
  • Salary may vary based on experience, seniority, and step at the time of agreement.

Responsibilities Protect university employees, students, and the public; patrol and safeguard campus properties. Conduct traffic, criminal, and non‑criminal investigations. Prepare for security around special events and court appearances. Maintain assigned equipment and perform routine maintenance. Engage in community policing, mediate disputes, and support campus safety initiatives. Participate in emergency management and response operations. Submit incident reports and statistical data, and testify in court when required. Minimum Qualifications Retired from the Public Employees' Retirement System of Nevada before hire date. Active Nevada POST Category 1 certification. No suspension or revocation of POST certification. No more than 60 months elapsed since last employment in another jurisdiction. Education and experience requirements: High school graduation + 1 year law‑enforcement experience; or Associate of Arts in criminal justice, police science, psychology, or related field + 6 months law‑enforcement experience; or 1 year experience as a University Police Officer I in Nevada State service. Valid driver’s license. Pre‑employment drug screening; possible psychological and polygraph testing. Meet Nevada Revised Statutes and Administrative Code standards for peace officers. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities – ENTRY LEVEL Understanding of federal regulations, state statutes, and local laws relevant to law enforcement. Knowledge of criminal law, court procedures, evidence rules, and search and seizure. Ability to use firearms, handcuffs, radios, and patrol vehicles safely. Competence in operating a personal computer, preparing reports, and following instructions. Strong communication skills across diverse cultural and socioeconomic groups. Adherence to POST continuing education and firearm qualifications. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities – FULL PERFORMANCE Familiarity with UNLV and departmental policies, campus situations, and community policing techniques. Skill in compiling statistics, identifying crime trends, and generating reports. Ability to handle complex safety and security issues and maintain effective working relationships.
