Job Description:

Under the guidance of a Surgical Technologist, Sterile Processing Technician, or Registered Nurse, the Surgical Technologist Apprentice works at an entry-level, assisting Registered Nurses, Physicians, Sterile Processing Technicians, and other providers with direct patient care within the surgical setting. Stocks and completes census of supplies and equipment to ensure the maintenance of proper levels of supplies, materials, and equipment. Once competencies have been demonstrated, performs identified procedures while under supervision of a Registered Nurse or Physician.

Education Qualifications:

Key Responsibilities:

• Assist in operating room set-up, preparation and transportation of surgical patients, and clinical assistance during surgical cases, working in collaboration with surgeons, nurses, and surgical technologists
• As competencies advance, may assist with adjusting lighting and operating room equipment prior to and during cases, securing and handing off surgical instrumentation, positioning and holding retractors, cutting sutures, and taking inventory of supplies prior to and at the closure of operative cases
• May assist sterile processing technicians or surgical technicians with other duties based on competencies and needs

Educational Requirement:

• High School Diploma or GED

Required Qualifications:

• Enrolled in an Essentia Health Surgical Technologist Apprentice Training Program advancing through learning modules for 12 months as skills are acquired to perform the Surgical Technologist position. Upon completion of the program, national certification (NCCT) is required within 12 months of completing the educational program and meeting the on-the-job requirement

Preferred Qualifications:

• Previous healthcare experience and medical terminology

Certification/Licensure Requirements:

• Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certified, or able to obtain within 3 months
