Overview Boston Public Schools seeks an exceptional English as a second language (ESL) and Special education/moderate disabilities teacher for Grade K-8 (Part-Time 0.8 FTE) for SY25-26. Reports to: Principal/Head of School. Responsibilities Teach: English as a Second Language (ESL) to Multilingual Learners identified as English Learners. Collaborate and communicate with students’ content teachers to align instruction and support for English language development across all four domains and classroom instructional needs (instructions, vocabulary, reading and writing support, and clarification of assignments). Collaborate with the school’s instructional leadership team, instructional coaches, and administration to ensure ELL students receive language support and other forms of academic assistance. Assist with the oversight and delivery of ACCESS administration. Prepare for and assist with organization of ELL student transition meetings for those ready to transition out of ELL services. Plan and deliver lessons aligned to WIDA Instructional Standards for varying levels of English proficiency. Demonstrate cultural proficiency and use effective, culturally-relevant instructional practices. Integrate technology into the classroom as an instructional tool and for personal productivity. Demonstrate understanding of and fluency with WIDA’s ELD Standards Framework and Can Do Descriptors. Assist classroom teachers in the administration of all mandated state and local assessments for English language learners when appropriate. Attend district and state-sponsored professional development opportunities to stay current with changes in ELL instruction and improvements in ELL teaching strategies. Moderate Disabilities Implement district learning goals and objectives, aligned with state frameworks, with familiarity in identifying access points for student portfolio development. Provide small-group instruction to students with moderate to severe cognitive delays to support understanding and progress in the general curriculum. Write and implement goals and objectives in line with student Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and provide regular progress reports. Provide accommodations for learning and testing; develop curriculum as needed; collect and analyze student work for MCAS Alternative Assessment progress. Collaborate as a team within the school to support others in responding to student needs for modification. Assist with transition to adult living services as appropriate. Core Competencies Accountability for Student Achievement Sets ambitious learning goals, creates cognitively demanding tasks, and models that all students can master challenging material through effort Assesses understanding regularly and adjusts instruction to reach goals Passionate and optimistic about students, content, and the teaching profession Communicating Content Knowledge Mastery of the content and pedagogy; connects to real-world settings; conveys content engagingly Equitable and Effective Instruction Scaffolds and differentiates instruction to support all students Fosters an inclusive learning environment where every student participates and is respected Cultural Proficiency Respects differences and maintains a respectful environment Parent/Family Engagement Engages with families to build collaborative relationships Professional Reflection & Collaboration Qualifications Required Bachelor’s degree Valid Massachusetts Teaching License in ESL at the appropriate grade level Valid Massachusetts Teaching License in Moderate Disabilities at the appropriate grade level Fully licensed and Highly Qualified according to state and federal guidelines Ability to meet the Standards of Effective Teaching as outlined by BPS Current authorization to work in the United States by start date Able to model excellent spoken and written English for students learning English Qualification Preferred Experience teaching in an urban setting Candidates fluent in one of BPS’ official languages (Spanish, Creole, Chinese, Vietnamese, Portuguese, Somali, etc.) Core content teachers who are certified in their subject area and in Moderate Disabilities and/or ESL Terms BTU, Group I.
